As part of the European Research Area: Fostering Greater Integration. Advancing Competitiveness conference hosted by the European Commission, the COOPERATE and ERA_FABRIC projects teamed up with ERRIN network to organize a highly anticipated side event, “𝙀𝙍𝘼 𝙃𝙪𝙗𝙨: 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙒𝙖𝙮 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙”, on September 19th in Brussels.
During this dynamic session, we explored the concept of ERA Hubs. ERA Hubs are designed to strengthen regional innovation ecosystems, foster collaboration, and break down silos between public and private sectors. The goal? To empower regions to take a larger role in shaping R&D policies and investments across Europe.
💡 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀::
– The role of ERA Hubs in driving knowledge-driven innovation at a regional level.
– Insights from high-level speakers including representatives from the European Commission and Committee of the Regions.
– The potential of ERA Hubs to connect stakeholders, boost competitiveness, and support a more integrated European Research Area.
We are thrilled by the active participation and fruitful discussions, setting the stage for the future of innovation and regional development in Europe! Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to shape the way forward together.

May 2024 // Stakeholder Event on FP10
The current and future competitiveness of a region strong in technology driven high tech manufacturing, such as Brainport Eindhoven, starts with an outstanding knowledge base. That is why I was delighted to participate – together with the ‘crème de la crème’ of the Dutch R&I community – in the Stakeholder Event on FP10, the upcoming successor of Europe’s research and innovation programme Horizon Europe – that was organised earlier this week by Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) | Partner in Sustainable Development.
A big thank you for giving me the opportunity to contribute to the panel discussion on European collaboration between ecosystems. For a European leadership in a global competitive context to thrive, consistent support for long lasting and structural collaboration between “pockets of excellence” is needed. FP10 needs to give ample room to stimulate and strengthen these initiatives, which will benefit the whole of the EU.

The European Week of Regions and Cities (#EURegionsWeek) is the biggest annual Brussels-based event dedicated to cohesion policy. It has grown to become a neutral platform to discuss common challenges for Europe’s regions and cities by bringing together a diverse community of speakers and participants. In 2022 reached a record number of almost 20.000 participants, 272 sessions, and 528 partners. This year one of the six topics of focus for the event will be: “Breaking barriers to cross-border cooperation”.
‘Universities as Drivers of Innovation in European Regional Ecosystems’
During the European Week of Regions and Cities is the session ‘Universities as Drivers of Innovation in European Regional Ecosystems‘ one to take in particular in mind. This session explores the role of universities as drivers of change in European Innovation Ecosystems, with a particular focus on mid-size regional and urban areas. By adopting a multi-disciplinary, challenge-based, educational approach and a multiple helix model of innovation, universities can contribute to the development of a polycentric and networked model of innovation, connecting urban and rural areas and helping municipalities to adopt innovative solutions.
29 September 2023 // UNlimited Festival
On September 29th, 2023, a Co-creation session was held at the Universiteiten van Nederland UNlimited Festival in Den Bosch, Netherlands, focusing on the critical theme: “Open Innovation Ecosystems: The role of ERA Hubs for collaborative regional innovation.” Represented by Marcel Bogers and Ntorina Antoni (Eindhoven University of Technology) and Rick Eurlings (Brainport Development), the COOPERATE consortium took part in this enlightening discussion.
Session Topic: “This workshop centered on achieving the objective of fostering collaborative innovation through the establishment of ecosystems. The core focus was to validate the fundamental components of an #ERA Hub Framework, a policy initiative fostering knowledge production within the European Research Area across regions. Drawing from the insights and experiences of our engaged participants, we aimed to refine this framework. By fostering collaboration, we sought to understand how regional #ecosystems can facilitate open innovation and enrich our comprehension of robust research and innovation environments at the regional level.”
6 May 2023 // Second General Assembly
After having had the kick-off in Brainport Eindhoven earlier this year, it was great having everyone in the same room again. We’re looking back at a very interesting and fruitful (and sunny) second General Assembly of COOPERATE at DTU Skylab and Science City Lyngby. We discussed the process towards an initial ERA hub framework, the playbook, toolbox, and platform, and the challenges, strategies & expected outcomes for the project.
16 March 2023 // COOPERATE in Danish newspaper!
In the Sjællandske Medier Nyheder an interview was published with Marianna Lubanski, director of Science City Lyngby. The article elaborates on the project, which is selected as leading example if you want to build local partnerships between municipalities, educational institutions and companies. According to Marianna, “In Denmark and the Netherlands, we are well advanced in our efforts to initiate local partnerships, while in many other places in Europe, such transversal partnerships have not yet been established”.

23 January 2023 // Kick-off in Eindhoven
This meeting kicked off the activities of the project “COOrdinating and Piloting actions towards ERA-hubs as in Ter- and intra- regional Ecosystems for knowledge production (COOPERATE)”, launched in January 2023 and funded by the European Commission.
The project, led by the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), aims to develop and pilot the ERA Hub concept based on the vision and success stories developed within the EuroTech Universities Alliance and their R&I ecosystems. The overall approach revolves around co-creation arenas in which ecosystems and a broader community of quadruple helix actors can interact. The piloting phases of the project’s implementation are expected to test the approach and pave the way for its consolidation and replication phase.
This two-day event was co-organized by the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and Brainport Development, who were joined by STAM SRL, IDEA Consult, Technical University of Denmark, Science City Lyngby, and Czech Technical University in Prague. All seven COOPERATE partners had the opportunity to share the aims and objectives of the COOPERATE project towards the development and testing of ERA hubs in Europe. Needs, expectations and next steps were discussed both days at TU/e campus and High Tech Campus Eindhoven.
At the occasion of the “European Research Area: Fostering Greater Integration. Advancing Competitiveness” conference organized by the European Commission and happening in Brussels on September 18-19.
The ‘COOPERATE’ and ‘ERA_FABRIC’ projects, in collaboration with the ERRIN network, organize a side-event on the topic of “ERA Hubs”.
‘COOPERATE’ and ‘ERA_FABRIC’ are proud to share developments and explore possible ways forward with the targeted audience.
Invited high level speakers include representatives of the Committee of the Regions and the European Commission.
